Drs. Roger Quinn, Hillel Chiel, Kathryn Daltorio and Jessica Fox have received a Breaking Boundaries Seed Grant for $100,000 to support the creation of an Institute for Adaptive Behavior. Drs. Quinn and Daltorio (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) and Drs. Chiel and Fox (Biology) will collaborate to work towards creating an Institute for Adaptive Behavior, which will combine neuroAI (i.e., artificial intelligence that is fully informed by neuroscience), neurorobotics (i.e., embodied artificial devices whose control is shared between the body and the controller) and neurobiology (i.e., the study of the neural basis of adaptive behavior in animals and humans) to understand the underlying mechanisms of adaptive behavior. The Institute will both advance the understanding of adaptive behavior in animals and humans through new concepts and technology, and create new AI systems that will be energy efficient and can serve as the controllers for safe, smart and self-sufficient artificial devices.
