New research from Sarah Bagby’s group provides the first broad look at the abundance, activity, and impacts of mobile genetic elements in a complex natural ecosystem. Research scientist Derek Smith and postdoctoral scholar Dylan Cronin contributed to the work, which Bagby led jointly with colleagues Matthew Sullivan of The Ohio State University and Simon Roux of the Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute. Their results are on the cover of the July issue of Nature Microbiology. Bagby and Roux are also interviewed about the work in the latest episode of the Joint Genome Institute’s “Genome Insider” podcast.
