Dr. Schook is the Associate Research Curator at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She focuses on endocrine and behavioral monitoring of health, welfare, and reproductive biology in wildlife, as well as gamete cryobiology and assisted reproductive techniques. Her research is aimed at optimizing the care of animals in zoos and developing tools to improve population management preserve genetic diversity and ensure the long-term health and viability of endangered populations. We use a variety of techniques, including enzyme- and radio-immunoassays to monitor hormones in urine, feces, saliva and blood. Hormones including glucocorticoids, reproductive steroids and metabolic regulators such as insulin and inflammatory cytokines provide insight into the health and welfare status of animals managed in a zoo-environment in relation to factors such as enrichment, diet, and other management practices. In addition, the development of techniques such as semen collection, sperm cryopreservation and artificial insemination allow us to preserve the current genetic diversity of managed populations. Dr. Schook obtained her PhD in Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky. She is a steering committee member of the AZA Endocrine, Reproduction, and Ambassador Animal Scientific Advisory Groups and a member of the AZA Research & Technology Committee.
