Microbiology students attend local High School as part of nation-wide collaboration

Students from Dr. Dianne Kube’s Microbiology class visited sophomore students and their teacher, Catherine Herman, at Ginn Academy in Cleveland. They were taking part in a nation-wide collaboration with Yale University – Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria in the Environment (PARE).

The Ginn Academy students collected soil and our undergraduate students in Microbiology Lab plated and incubated the organisms, then took the plates back to Ginn Academy for them to count colonies on plates with and without two concentrations of tetracycline. They also determined the CFU/gm of soil and the % of antibiotic resistance.
